Using MPD24 with full duplex midi cables

Postby Trevor » Tue Feb 23, 2010 12:13 am

Running Vyzex MPD24 under Vista with USB cable just about works (not without intial frustrations though!). I wish it was more solid.

After reading the troubleshooting guide (which criticises the vista usb midi driver) I have removed the usb cable and powered up the MPD24 with a 6v power adaptor and connected via a MIDIsport 2x2 USB MIDI interface. I connected MID OUT of midisport to midi in of MPD24 and midi out of MPD24 to midi in of midi sport...and of course I connected the usb of the midisport to my computer.

MY PROBLEM is this doesn't work at all - Vyzex MPD24 cannot find the MPD24 at all. I wonder if midisport 2x2 is certified? ...while we're at it I also have an Edirol UA-101. Is that certified? Right now this is fairly depressing and I am wondering if purchasing an MPD24 was a mistake. Maybe I'm better off with a mouse - at least it works reliably. All my music making has grinded to a halt while I sumo wrestle with the MPD24.

As far as I know I have the latest version of everything - V1.0 of Vyzex MPD24 and 1.10 of MPD24 firmware (the installation of which was a terifying experience).

Hi Trevor,

If you are having issues with the built-in USB MIDI port driver, the issue is either a driver conflict or the MIDI device limit problem explained in the troubleshooting guide.

The first thing to do is check to see if the Vyzex program can 'see' your MidiSport 2x2 from the 'MIDI->MIDI In Ports...' dialog. If yes, then also check the 'MIDI->MIDI Out Ports...' dialog... As long as you can see the MidiSport from these dialogs, the only possibility here is that MPD24 doesn't respond to device inquiry messages when they are received via the external MIDI sockets. This would stop AutoSense from working when connected to these sockets.

The solution in this case is to reconfigure the program for manual operation, which is explained on page 9 of the Troubleshooting Guide. If on the other hand the program CAN'T see the driver installed you should go to the M-Audio website and ensure you are using the latest Vista drivers for the MidiSport 2x2 (which IS a certified interface for use with our software, by the way)

Please let us know how it goes - We have tried to anticipate every possible source of confusion in our PDF manual set, but it's inevitable that someone will eventually slip through the cracks of what we are trying to explain. That's what this forum is for, after all.

Thanks Tony, that was very helpful and is much appreciated. I've got the MPD24 working and although there is an issue with autosense it doesn't matter as I don't need it. I've switched it off. :D
