Problem with Akai MPK61 and Reason 4.01

Postby knofix » Sat Mar 06, 2010 3:46 am

Hello all.

I am having this strange problem with my AKAI MPK61, which I just bought yesterday and Reason (at first 4.0, but the problem persists in 4.01 also)
Reason by default does not support the MPK61, so I also coppied the Codecs and remote files into the appropriate locations.
The problem is:
Reason now has an option to select MPK61 from the list of supported midi keyboards, but when i try to setup the In and Out port nothing happens. I cannot select it from the drop down menu, nor does it find it, when it should while it urges me to press a button on the midi/controller.

OS: WinXP 32bit SP3 /w latest patches and newest drivers for hardware
Reason version: 4.01 - latest build
Installed drivers for MPK61 - the ones that came with it on the CD
MPK61 firmware - 1.02 i think
Connection: MPK->PC via usb cable provided in the box

I also tried different USB ports, since I have found several threads on forums worldwide where it is advised to plug the midi into an USB port that is not near the ethernet RJ-45 connector. (Advice by AKAI - dumb one)
I wanted to buy a M-Audio Axiom 49, which I have also tested on this same build, and it worked out of the box flawlessly (installation & configuration)
The midi is also configured to work with reason, this was done by following the pdf manual that came on the driver/remote file disc supplied by AKAI.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance and best regards

k.

Your problem is that the MPK61 uses the Windows Class Compliant driver, which is unfortunately single-client: Only one program can access the port at one time. You'll need to close the editor when you run Reason and vice versa.

Axiom ships with a custom multi-client driver by M-Audio which is why it can operate with two programs simultaneously on Windows.

The Mac class compliant driver is multi-client so you can use any MPK or MPD controller with as many simultaneous programs as you'd like on OSX. This said, you could connect your MPK to your Windows machine through its MIDI ports and a separate multi-client MIDI interface to get this functionality on Windows.

So I kinda got the same problem, except I got the MPK88 (I guess there are no differences between them then the keys). On my Dell Studio XPS 13 - Windows 7 Ultimate x64, Core2Duo @ 2,4 Ghz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Nvidia 9500M - I have installed all the latest drivers and latest version of Reason 4.0.1. However, when I go to preferences --> Keyboard and Control surfaces --> Akai --> MPK88, the only thing that works are the transport controls, knobs and faders. All the keys on my MPK88 just don't send any signal to my computer. The weirdest part is if I set my control surface as an <Other> Midi Control Keyboard, everything just works fine with the exception of the 'Record' button. Like all the other transport controls work perfectly, BUT the record button! OK I have to go to options and sync Reason 4.0.1 with the Midi Clock of the MPK, but it is still better than when I picked the MPK88 (or other Akai products) on the choose Control surface window, because then all my keys wouldn't work. I know for sure all my hardware works, because either all my keys work seamlessly but the record button OR everything works perfect BUT the keys. I just want EVERYTHING to work.

I am using ASIO4ALL as my audio card driver. But that should not be the problem, because first of all all the controls work fine. Ow and when I set MPK88 as the control surface, and I have to choose the ports in and out, and click on "Detect Controller", and press one of my keys, it displays Akai MPK88 just fine. Haha eventhough it is not the biggest problem on earth, I just hate the fact I have to press "Play" on my MPK first and then "Record" on my computer.

Any information or solution would be very helpful.

Best regards and thanks in advance!

Off-topic: What does the "Change Program" thing do on my MPK88 ? In the manual it doesn't explain this very clearly lol.
