Hello.
The problem: Vyzex Venom compatibility with USB 3.0 port

I have a new HP Pavillion notebook dv7-6100
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
Radeon (TM) HD 6770M graphics
MAudio Venom (drivers 5.10.0.5140 and 1.0.1.0) with latest Vyzex software (1.11)

This computer has 4 USB ports
2 are USB 2.0
2 are USB 3.0 (also known as super speed)

USB 3.0 is supposed to be backwards compatible with USB 2.0 devices (like the Venom).
And it is, with computer mouse, flash drive, or external hard drive.
The Vyzex software works wonderfully over the USB 2.0 ports.
But when connected to either USB 3.0 port,
the initial upload of the Venom's settings begins but pauses before completion.
Can cancel and it will attempt next bank, start then get stuck part way through.
Can monitor the MIDI data from Vyzex screen, see some hex codes then just stops.
Can cancel all to get to the Vyzex Venom control screen.

From the Vyzex software, looking at bank contents (C and D) a partial set of presets is seen. Just the first few. Rest are blank.

Can make program changes and they appear on the Venom. So the software can communicate with the Venom.

The USB 3.0 also works with a DAW, in my case Reaper.
I can control a VST and also record audio through Venom instrument port.

The ASIO driver also works (but sometimes reports 44KHz streaming audio instead of Connected) but continues to work.

Initial Venom to Vyzex upload works fine on the USB 2.0 ports. Does not stop. Every feature works well on USB 2.0 port.

On the USB 3.0 I tried Vyzex with "Run as Administrator" with no impact.

I also played around with Sysex buffer sizes with no effect.

The USB 3.0 driver is Renesas (NEC) 2.0.32.0

Any thoughts on this issue?
I can find no way to change any USB 3.0 settings to possibly help.

Before releasing next version of Vyzex software, can you test on a computer with USB 3.0 port?

problem could be in the HP computer or Renesas chip set but they are making millions of these and they work with my USB 2.0 peripherals.
Could be the Venom software driver where they convert USB to MIDI
Could be in the Vyzex software, the way it breaks the data into blocks. (changing the buffer sizes in the program makes no difference however)

I'm guessing a Sysex function is used for the data upload since SYS flashes on the Venom.

There are problems reported on internet about sysex over usb but all very old and not applicable to this issue.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi John,

Thanks for taking the time to compose such an in-depth and thoughtful post.

The USB 3.0 compatibility issue is for M-Audio, the USB hardware driver provider and Microsoft to address - The Vyzex application is simply accessing a MIDI port provided by the operating system and if data fails to transfer back intact there is literally nothing the software can do about it. All data block division is handled by the OS, incidentally - The software passes MIDI messages as single elements to the MIDI driver and that's it on our side of things.

This said, I will pass your report on to M-Audio and we'll see what they can come up with on the USB MIDI driver side. Additionally, we will be testing all our software with USB 3.0 in the future, but since our DeLorean's flux capacitor is burned out getting access to such hardware (and OSX Lion for example) was somewhat problematic for us in 2010 when we started work on Vyzex Venom. All we can do is adapt to the constant changes that take place in our environment and hope we can keep up.

Cheers,

Tony

I am running Vyzex Venom 1.17 on my PCAL Mobile I7 with Windows 7 64 bit Professional. My Venom is hooked up to a USB 3.0 port and it is communicating without any issues at all. The PC uses the NEC chip for USB 3.0 and the driver version is 1.0.19.0 and I am also using the latest M-Audio drivers for the Venom.

Hello synergy.

I tried updating my Renesas USB 3.0 drivers to the latest (2.1.19.0) and the problem still happens. Initial upload of Venom settings hangs part way through, you cancel, and the next section starts and hangs, etc. Does not do this on a pure USB 2.0 port.

To Tony:
can you advise (possibly by private email) how get access to the latest beta version of Vyzex (1.17)? I see synergy is using that and it works. I have the released version 1.11. I'm hoping some of the updates changed the timing enough to fix this problem.

Thanks.

Hi John,

Version 1.17 is the pre-release build (it's a release candidate, not a mere beta) that will be eventually released as Vyzex 1.5. I am doubtful that the update will resolve your USB hardware/driver issue but you will definitely appreciate the new features it has over the release version. On the other hand, Vyzex Venom 1.17 requires the latest firmware from M-Audio and if you are still using v1.11 of the Vyzex editor you are probably not running that. You should download and run the firmware updater for your Venom from the m-audio website before you install the Vyzex update. The firmware update may just do the trick...

We have a pre-release forum announcement that explains how to join the pre-release team, but since I know you want in from this post I will private message you the access details now.

1. You must update your Venom firmware to the latest from M-Audio.

2. If on Windows, you MUST uninstall the earlier Vyzex Venom before installing the v1.17 update. We completely reorganized how the program handles its configuration files to suit the latest updates in how Windows 7 operates (reverse compatible with earlier OS versions of course) and if your old setup is still in place the update version will be mightily confused.

Let us know how it goes, and check your private messages now.

Cheers,

Tony

An update for anyone reading this forum,

Vyzex Venom v1.20 has just been tested as functional on both Windows 8 (with the M-Audio Windows 7 drivers) connected via a USB 3.0 port.

Your experiences may differ, but at least we know that both USB 3.0 and Windows 8 work with Venom's latest 64 bit Windows driver and certain USB 3.0 port chip-sets.
